Date Night Is… a Summer Bike Ride.
Sunshine on your shoulders and a breeze on your face – summer was made for bike rides! And with the long weekend days of early summer prompting Danny and I to pump up our bike tires and dust off our helmets, we have a number of date-worthy bike ride itineraries to share.
A quick ride and a picnic: No matter where you are, if the sun is shining and the road is clear, pack a picnic in your backpack and head for the nearest park. Sliding the ice packs near your back can keep both you and your lunch cool, and remember a picnic blanket that’s big enough for a little canoodling in the grass, or cloud watching after.
An impromptu adventure: If you are are lucky enough to live in a city with a bikeshare program, just grab a couple of bikes instead of a cab, car, or the subway to add a little adventure to getting from A to B with your sweetie. If you are in NYC, we recommend the newly-launched Citi Bike. And you’ll look like a pro if you download the Ride the City app to your phone, or check your route online beforehand.
Explore the great outdoors: Get out in nature with your baby for a trail ride. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a nationwide network of bike trails built on former rail lines and running through some of the most naturally stunning parts of the country. You can find a full map of the trail system here along with trail reviews, maps and GPS downloads.
Bike to the beach: Combine a couple of the best summertime activities if you live near the coast. In New York, you can enjoy a ride in dappled sunlight down the historic Ocean Parkway bike path to Coney Island. The City put together a guide for biking to the beach in any of the 4 outer boroughs that offers some nice alternatives and tips.
